Looking for a solid career? Low unemployment seen among healthcare and nursing professions

If you’re looking for a career with “a future,” consider healthcare, including nursing and therapy services.

A study conducted by Georgetown University in early 2012 found experienced professionals and recent graduates from healthcare have the lowest unemployment rates. [1]Recent graduates were defined as those between ages 22 and 26, while experienced professionals where those between ages 30 and 54.

For example, look at nurses. The study found very low unemployment rates for experienced nurses, just 1.9%. Even those who were recent college graduates had a relatively low unemployment rate of 4%.[2]

To learn more about preparing for a nursing career, visit the nursing section at the Brookline College website. Brookline College offers two types of bachelor of science degrees in nursing (BSN), one for high school graduates and an accelerated program for bachelor degree holders.

The Georgetown study also had good news for students and graduates in treatment therapy programs, which includes physical therapy and massage therapy. Experienced graduates in these professions had the lowest unemployment rates of the healthcare professions included in the study–1.8%. The study did not have unemployment data for recent graduates.

Brookline College offers a Physical Therapist Assistant Associate of Science degree. The program trains students in therapeutic exercise and patient care, using hands-on education alongside classroom work and assignments. Program graduates are prepared to assist employers in delivering different types of rehabilitative therapies.

Those who are interested in gaining an introduction to different types of healthcare training and education programs can review Brookline College’s healthcare programs:

[2] At the time the study was conducted in 2009 and 2010, national unemployment for all new bachelor degree graduates was 8.9%, Unemployment was 22.9% for recent high school graduates and 31.5% for recent high school dropouts.

Study Tip

As the Director of Education here at the Brookline College Albuquerque Campus, I consistently hear students talk about a related issue. Time management and finding the time to fit all that they do into one day is a challenge at best. I am amazed at how students manage school, work, kids, daycare, spouses or significant others, transportation issues and other life circumstances.
One particular issue, especially with single parents of small children, is finding the time to do homework and study while taking care of little ones that demand attention. Here is a helpful study tip that can combine study time, taking care of little ones, and a bit of fun.

Kids love when their parents give them attention. They also love stories, especially those that are creative and fun. Kids also love snacks, so let’s put all of these items together.
1. Every night, put aside time with your kids for Story Time
2. Before story time begins, take a look at the items you need to study and see how they fit into a time honored story or start creating an original story. Do not concern yourself with how perfect the story is, in fact, the more kooky and fun the story, the better – Kids love crazy, fun, kooky stories
3. Get the kids a little snack so they don’t get fussy and sit them down for Story Time
4. Get out your homework and start telling your kids a fun story that includes items that you need to study. Here is an example:

Let’s say you need to learn and understand the differences between three types of medical charts, Chronological Medical Record chart (CMR), Problem Oriented Medical Record chart (POMR), and Source Oriented Medical Record chart (SOMR) – Here is how the story might unfold. . .

One day there was a big party, and three very interesting and fun charts where invited. There was cake and balloons and . . . (Insert you child’s favorite things here).
The first chart was the Chronological Medical Record or (CMR) chart. When he introduced himself he said, “I’m a very important chart. I am a patient chart that follows patient over period of time with each visit consisting of new entry date, rather than symptom, or diagnosis. I’m a great chart to have and am very proud of myself.”

The next chart, well she was all dressed up and very pretty. She said, “I’m a very special chart. My name is Miss Problem Oriented Medical Record chart, but you can call me POMR for short. I was developed in 1970 by Dr. Lawrence Weed to identify a patient by their problems and chart by the problem, or disease being treated. I’m mostly used in a specialized clinic, which is why I’m all dressed up and special.”
The last chart said, “Hi there everybody! I’m a Source Oriented Medical Record chart, but my friends call me SOMR. If you are ever looking for me, I’ll be in a medical clinic. I have tabs for special designated areas LABS, Insurance, Surgeries and Procedures, History and Physical, and such. I wear those tabs with pride!”
All three charts played games and ate cake and decided that they would go to every party they could together!

Your initial reaction to this study tip might be, “This is corny!” or “I can’t get my kids to sit still that long.” Give it a try! You might be impressed with how well it works!

What are the benefits, you ask?
• You get to spend quality time with your children
• They will hear big words that most young children do not get to hear, which could increase their vocabulary
• You might find that studying like this helps your memorization and recall
So give this a try and see if melding homework and taking care of your children saves you some time!

An organization is only as strong as its leadership and it is clear all registered nurses are leaders. Some are directors or assistant directors of nursing, others are nurse managers and supervisors, some lead a team providing daily care for patients, while still others focus on case management, staff development, or quality improvement. Even unlicensed assistive personnel have expanded responsibilities in the areas of patient evaluation and satisfaction (Kleinman & Saccomano, 2006). All require leadership skills.

Nurses provide care as well as manage the care environment. Warren Bennis (1994) explains the difference between management and leadership by saying, “Management is doing things right. Leadership is doing the right thing.” But leadership is defined in many ways so how are we to know if we have it, how to develop it, and how to use it?

The Army has identified eleven leadership principles. These are:

• Be tactically and technically proficient

• Know yourself and seek self-improvement

• Know your soldiers and look out for their welfare

• Keep your soldiers informed

• Set the example

• Ensure the task is understood, supervised and accomplished

• Train your soldiers as a team

• Make sound and timely decisions

• Develop a sense of responsibility in your subordinates

• Employ your unit in accordance with its capabilities

• Seek responsibility and take responsibility for your actions

Brookline College emphasizes the nurse’s leadership role in all its nursing programs. Whether as a direct caregiver, a coordinator of care, the leader of a team of unlicensed personnel, or as a nurse educator, leadership principles are embedded throughout the undergraduate and graduate curricula.

“More than One FutureSM” Program to Encourage “More Education, Less DebtSM”

July 19, 2012 – Phoenix, Ariz. – Brookline College, a multi-campus, higher education organization headquartered in Phoenix, Ariz., has launched a groundbreaking program, called “More than One FutureSM”, that allows students to improve their future by offering them the opportunity to return to school and take a second degree or diploma program tuition-free.

“It is no secret that times are tough. The economy is moving slowly, unemployment is higher than anybody would like, and finding well-paying jobs remains a challenge,” said Ed Beauchamp, President for Brookline College. “At Brookline College, we recognize that the way we’ve always helped students in the past may not be enough to help them in the future. That’s why we are introducing our new tuition-free second program initiative, “More Than One FutureSM”.

“Brookline College’s new “More Than One FutureSM” program literally means more education and less debt for potentially thousands of our students,” continued Beauchamp. “We are giving students more options to shape their future and more opportunities for success with additional education at no additional tuition cost. ”

There are some important conditions to maintain eligibility for the second, tuition-free program. The criteria for eligibility can be obtained at any of Brookline College’s campuses.

“We believe this program is an investment in our students’ success,” continued Beauchamp. “We anticipate that employers with tuition-reimbursement programs will find that giving students an additional program with no additional tuition cost is a great value for their company’s investment in their employees.”

When it comes to interview questions, sometimes you have to read between the lines. Regardless of what you are asked during an interview, you would be wise to take a second to think about the reasoning behind each question. With the current competitive job market, employers must refine their interview techniques in order to efficiently sift through the applicant pool.

These five seemingly simple questions may be a bit trickier than you think.

What is your biggest weakness?

We all know that everyone has a weakness or two, but most people don’t like talking about them. Use this opportunity to share a weakness which can be improved upon. For example, if the idea of public speaking makes you sweat, then a good response might be “I would really love to improve my public speaking skills in the next position I take.” This shows your willingness to take on a challenge and to improve as a person and an employee.

Tell me about yourself.

Brevity is key here. You’ve had a long life and this question is very broad. Focus on your education, experience and anything relevant to the position you are applying for. It’s ok to get personal but only if it pertains to the job at hand. For example, if you are applying for a position in IT, it’s not a bad idea to state your life-long love for anything technology related.

Why did you leave your last job?

This is not the time to complain about your previous boss or to badmouth the company you used to work for. An employer may interpret this as a sign that you have an attitude problem, an issue with authority, or a lack of flexibility in the workplace. Instead, focus on the positive. Perhaps you would like to take on more responsibilities, explore new challenges or become familiar with a different industry.

Why should we hire you?

You should prepare for this common question before every interview. Make sure to research the company and find places where your specific skill set and background can be an asset. Make sure you have a thorough understanding of the job description you have applied for, and think of specific ways to highlight your strengths within the stated job requirements.

Why is a manhole cover round?

Any seemingly bizarre question that comes out of left field is often intended to test your creativity, ability to think on your feet, and your ability to stay calm under pressure. This particular question, famously asked in Microsoft interviews has several “correct” answers. Most importantly, the interviewer wants to see how you get to your answer, not the answer itself. Think the question through before answering and be creative!

If you would like assistance with interview techniques, resume writing, or help searching for a job, contact Career Services. They are there to help!

Have you been thinking about becoming a nurse? There are probably hundreds of reasons why it’s a great idea, but we’ve narrowed it down to these five:

Employment Opportunities: The need for qualified nurses continues to grow. Until we come up with a cure for, well… everything, people will continue to get sick and need the care of doctors and nurses.

Rewarding: As a nurse, you are given the unique opportunity to make a positive impact on your patients’ lives every single day. You will help to relieve their pain and suffering while boosting morale and hope. There are few professions out there which allow the kind of personal interaction nurses are able to have with their patients.

Variety: As a nurse, there are many different types of positions available within the field. You may work with babies, children, the elderly, emergency cases or all of the above! No two days are the same for a nurse.

Room for growth: Nurses have plenty of room to grow professionally either through further education or simply from work experience. Nurses are able to move up to management positions within hospitals or clinics and even may work towards a doctorate degree in nursing.

Schedule: There are so many options for nurses in regards to when and where they are able to work. Many offices and clinics offer a weekday 9-5 schedule while hospitals offer shifts any time day or night. It’s possible to work full-time or part-time as a nurse.

A career in the medical field can be both challenging and exciting. If you like working with people, love making a difference and are open to a flexible schedule, a career in nursing could be for you!
